Google Analytics helps in tracking and analysing behaviour of visitors to the site which is essential for any SEO campaign; Google AdWords helps you with keywords research allowing you to see what users search for and Google Webmaster tool provides you an insight into how you pages are performing. Therefore, when you set up the website you need to create an account with Google and add it to the website.

Website

If you have an existing website then conduct a site audit before you start with SEO and if it’s a new one, make sure the content, accessibility, internal linking and the architecture of the site is compliant to search engine requirements. You can easily find the compliance checklist online. If the site is not compliant then chances are that pages will get penalised. Also, make sure that the web address has “WWW” or it doesn’t on the domain name. Having both options leads to getting recognised as two websites which can damage the ranking.

Navigation

Navigation not only needs to be smooth and quick for a visitor but also for the search engines. Hence, make sure to simplify the categories of information and name them diligently for the visitors with reasonable number of internal links on each page. While simultaneously putting them on universal navigation and ensure the drop-down menus are in HTML so that search engines can read them. Creating a site-map will enhance the navigation for search engine and make the website user-friendly.

Keyword research

To optimise the site to stand out from the hundreds and thousands of search results, you need to invest enough in keyword research. Google records over 100 billion search queries every month; hence keyword research is most important part of SEO. Tools such as Google AdWords Keyword Planner, Google Suggest, Ubersuggest, Google Trends and the Webmaster tools will help in understanding what visitors are searching for. Many tutorials by Google can guide you in landing right keyword phrases for the pages.

Content

Each page on the site must have quality content for the visitors as Google’s latest algorithm stresses high-quality writing and its usefulness and not heavy keyword usage. Each page should have diverse structure to content with appropriate headings and sub-headings. Try and target just one keyword phrase a page.

Meta Tags

Meta Tags and Meta description is what the visitor will read on search engine result to decide if he or she wants to visit the page. With 160 characters including the keyword phrase, you have to persuade the user to visit the page. While it is a difficult task, if you have effective content and right keyword phrase to work with it, you have done everything right.

Off-page

Make sure to have enough backlinks to the pages through blogs, content marketing, and social media to enhance the digital foot print and link building.
